This was an excellent mover. From the very first call I made to the finished move everyone was very professional yet personable. The movers arrived on time and worked quickly. I felt they were very mindful that we were paying by the hour and were sensitive to this. They were very careful with the furnishing. The company even has someone call during the move to see how things are going. I would definitely use this company again.
I was moving away temporarily, so I needed to move out and have my things in storage for a little less than a year. I hired ‘All My Sons’ (it’s a national company – the people I had the misfortune of dealing with were in Stratford, CT) because, based on what they told me over the phone, I thought they would be a little cheaper than others. I was wrong about that.
They will rip you off. Everything is extra. They call it a "fuel surcharge" but CT adds a 15 tax, so if you hire guys off Craig's list with a van they will be cheaper by the hour. These guys also charge you for the tape they use to wrap things. One would think that at $189 per hour, plus $189 per hour for the guys to sit in traffic in the truck, and the fuel surcharge and the one hour automatic "extra" charge that is added to every move -- this is how they quote you a low price, but is it manipulative and misleading. They add a full $200 to every move which is not even part of the paying-per-hour rate. It is just an added charge. But when they charged for the tape and the cardboard to wrap a mirror -- that is when they lost all credibility. I had a HOUSE FULL OF TAPE AND CARDBOARD BOXES and nobody said that if I used their tape and ONE box that it was $52 extra. BEWARE. The guys who did the work, the guys who hauled all my stuff, they were great, but the owners of the company are thieves.
The movers didn’t show up until around 5 pm on the day I was supposed to move out, so I wasn’t able to leave until very late.
The crew that unloaded also brought out two televisions for me that weren’t mine. They seemed like they would have been content to leave them with me, which makes me wonder if the owner ever got them back, and whether I’d been paying to store them all that time.
As a person who has utilized professional movers a dozen times in the past 25 years I can say without a doubt this company was the WORST experience I have ever encountered. They will promise you the world for a competitive price and it will start to unravel about 36 hours prior to your move - the rate will change, they will miraculously no longer have that great storage available they promised you and then they will show up hours late with a nice group of guys who know absolutely nothing about packing items. And good luck to you if you have to deal with Sam - this is a person who should never be allowed to speak directly to customers, at least female customers for sure. His condescension would only be mildly annoying if he actually knew what he was talking about. One of us knew how much time and packing materials I needed........and it wasn't him!! So needless to say, I currently have very expensive furniture in storage without even plastic wrapping on them. The only good news is because of their storage bait and switch and me needing to find my own storage the morning of the move I no longer have to do business with them for my move out to my new home, I can hire someone who actually knows what they're doing who will be horrified by the condition of my belongings in storage!! Oh and they have yet to send me an itemized bill but wouldn't unload into storage without me signing the credit card receipt......class operation!!! At least I saved the tip money!!
The storage charges are based on the number of crates that are used. They told me that the crates are 250 cu. ft. Based on my conversations with them, I was expecting to use 3 crates. I’d also gotten an estimate from another company (who I very much regret not hiring) that had come out to do look at my things and estimated the volume at 743 cu. ft. After they had my stuff on the truck, the crew that moved me out told me they thought I’d have ‘three, maybe four’ crates. All My Sons charged me for five!! They told me that there were some ‘fragile’ items outside the crates (which they charged me for as if I had a fifth crate).
That’s total BS – when I got my stuff back, I saw how little they cared about ‘fragile’ items. Actually, they broke stuff I didn’t think was fragile, including a bed frame! They also broke a table and several picture frames were damaged.
Looking at this, I feel stupid that I didn’t do a better job looking out for myself in this process. Of course, when you’re moving, you have plenty of other things to think about, so it would be nice to have a well-run, competent, trustworthy moving company, so you don’t need to worry about protecting yourself. That is definitely not the Connecticut operation of ‘All My Sons’.
Overall, they were pretty frustrating to deal with over the phone. Out of a sense of fairness, I left a message with Al, the manager, before writing this review so he might have a chance to say or do something to make me feel better. He never returned my call, which didn’t surprise me at all.
Excellent Moving Company- The Crew was very professional and careful with our belongings. During the move the office called to check on the professionalism and care that the crew was taking. One of our china cabinets ended up having the glass broken which the crew was quick to point out and replacement was taken care of within 2 days. I would definitely recommend this company.
Absolutely horrible. Broke my things and over-charged me. DO NOT hire these people!
When I told them some of my things were damaged, the office told me to call their claims company, ironically named “We Care Claims Management”. The paperwork involves signing – and having notarized!!! – an agreement, among other things, not to “publish or otherwise make to any person or entity verbally or in writing, any negative or derogatory remarks about AMS or its employees.” One suspects that this is really about covering their rear ends and making it hard to get reimbursed for damages.
